Rita Hayworth really was a screen goddess in the late 1940s--so why not cast her as Terpsichore, the goddess of dance? That's the premise of this splashy Technicolor musical, which borrows some devices (and cast members) from Here Comes Mr. Jordan. Rita descends to earth to inject authenticity into a Broadway show about Terpsichore, posing as an actress and turning the head of impresario Larry Parks (then in the brief moment between his Jolson Story smash and his blacklisting). This leads to an overblown, pretentious out-of-town tryout, an amusing sequence that predicts the highbrow disaster in The Band Wagon. In general, this film is funnier than its reputation, although it doesn't add up to anything and the song score is tepid (with one delightfully weird number where Rita considers bigamy with Parks and dancer Marc Platt). And Rita? Very creamy looking in a series of lavish gowns--and hardly down to earth. --Robert Horton

A young Jodie Foster stars in this compassionate portrait of four unhappy teenage girls struggling with life in late 1970s Los Angeles. Jeannie (Foster) and her friends all have parents who are either divorced, negligent, or downright abusive. Looking for some kind of point to their lives, the girls drink, do drugs, sleep around, and fight with their parents and each other--but Foxes isn't the trashy melodrama you might expect. The writing and performances are surprisingly good, though it's no surprise that Foster (Taxi Driver, The Silence of the Lambs) stands out for sheer charisma and depth. Director Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction, Flashdance) demonstrates a deft hand for juggling the girls' multiple storylines. Also featuring Sally Kellerman (M*A*S*H), Randy Quaid (Kingpin, Independence Day), Scott Baio (television's Happy Days), and a brief appearance by a very young Laura Dern (Blue Velvet, Citizen Ruth). --Bret Fetzer

Foxes is a movie that everyone can enjoy together.This is something not usually seen in movies of this type, so it makes it an unusual, yet pleasant experience.The movie is absolutely stunning and Jodie Foster deliver some award winning performances in this movie. I also think Cherie Currie was great!
